IC Thread Colin's Seeking

Post by Anja Rebekka Schultze on Fri Nov 06, 2015 11:21 am

(OOC: Well this will be Colin's Seeking, while the Seeking is happening he will be trapped in a mindscape. I generally use the house rule that Arete is not bought, usually you pay for the next dot at the start of the Seeking and then loose the points if the Seeking fails. I usually keep exp completely out of Seekings, if the Seeking succeeds then you will gain one more dot in Arete, if it fails then you will not, no exp is spent, so unless someone have anything against that house rule that is what I am going with. Also if anyone want to help out with the Seeking, taking up characters that are generated by Colin's mind and his Avatar to confront, guide and teach him in this mindscape then do let me know.)

You remember stepping through the mirror, the cold slick feeling of the glass and silver as your body move through it, like stepping into a chilly pond, but the memory quickly fades as the humming of machines takes it's place, under your feet are hard metal plates, above you are the harsh light of some sort of artificial lighting. For a moment you wonder where you are, but then you remember, The Shara, one of the many ships protecting Horizon from attack by both the Technocracy and other hostile forces of the Umbra. Part of you know you are in a Seeking, but that knowledge fades into the background as the ship shakes.
"We have lost another zeppelin!"
You hear a man scream as he run down the corridor, blood was flowing from a cut on his forehead and he sprinted past you. Slowly the knowledge dawn on you, The Shara is a base ship, created the extend the range of the powerful, but short range zeppelin Umbra ships that protected Horizon.

Another blast of something made the ship shake, you can hear the mental, fine steel on the inside, Primium on the outer layers, groan as The Shara was boarded.
"Wainwright, get to one of the fighters, we need to defend the remaining zeppelins or Horizon will fall!"
A woman calls from the end of the hallway, she was pretty with short, red hair and large green eyes...Lt. Bergamott Lefebvre Bani Sons of Ether, the second in command of this vessel, the woman's identity slowly dawned on you.
"Move your ass Wainwright, I know you have training in piloting an Umbral craft and we need all the pilots we can get, snap out of it man your wife and children are down there, on Horizon, if the Nephandi battler cruiser breaks through our ranks then they will die, along with thousands of others!"
Bergamott ordered then she hurried down the corridor and in through a side door and you hear her barking orders to someone there as well, ordering them to increase the Quintessence flow to the ship's wards and kinetic shields.

((OOC: Sounds good to me - I find the idea of paying for a chance of advancement is quite preposterous; kind of like "You have gained another 1000 XP; roll to see if you level up or not." Razz))

Colin saluted sharply and sprinted to the first available fighter, giving the smaller craft's hull a gentle caress before climbing in.
"War never changes, huh? Come now, sweetie, let's see if we can't save a few lives today," he said to the little flyer, bringing the engines to (proverbial, I presume) life and almost mechanically going through the pre-lauch check procedure, faster than he'd ever done in training, using the external threat to his family as a lens to focus his concentration.

Most of Horizon's fleet of Umbra ships where a mish mash of technomagick and more mystical enchantments, the base cruiser you where on where clearly a technomagickal artifact created mostly by the Sons of Ether with a little help from the Virtual Adepts, the zeppelins she supported though where literary there, zeppelins made up of ephemera, wood and metal and then enchanted. The little fighter ship though where stolen from a downed Technocracy ship and was even more on the technological side than The Shara who had arcane symbols engraved into the walls and some sort of green fluid running in tubes along the floors. The fighter though looked like something out of a science fiction movie, it was dart shaped, with a small cockpit that could fit two, but not comfortably, it had no wings but had two semi attached cylinders along the sides that contained the engines and the Quintessence batteries and would give the small craft movement in the Umbra.

Memories comes back to you on how you had gotten to be here. Jeffry Morgan one of the Deacons of your old Chantry had inherited an old Umbra ship from a relative of a former Cabalmate, and since none at the Chantry could fly the thing, you where given lessons, being the only pilot there. One thing had lead to the other and over the years you had gotten good at it and been offered a position at The Shara...you remember how to check the small craft for fuel...half a tank, that would do, for hull integrity, it was fine. You go through the check list quickly and within a minute you where ready to launch.

The fighter bay was square in shape with the smaller ships gathered around the large hatch in the center of the room, these doors where open now and under you...you could see Horizon, it was beautiful, as large as good sized moon, a mini Earth that shone in the darkness of the Umbra. The Spirit world was not space, and yet your mind choose to see it like this, it made everything easier to grasp rather than the half reality that it was. Down there you would find Freddy, and the kids, the oldest a teenager now and newly Awakened would usually been training with his mentor, but the girls...well everyone really would huddle together and hope...just hope that the zeppelins could hold out against the dark, unnatural things that carried the Nephandi to war.

You see one of the zeppelins now through the hatch in the fighter bay as you where given the green light to launch...the small but powerful Umbral ships was armed with a Quintessence cannon that could blow a hole right though the hull of the Fallen's ship, however the weapon took time to charge and energy had to be drained from the Nodes that supported Horizon first and readied, and in the meantime the mystical ships where vulnerable. You see blasts from the enemy hitting the zeppelin's kinetic shields, it could not hold out much longer and it was still draining Quintessence, it needed more time before it could fire it's cannon.

Colin narrowed his eyes, and quickly tapped in the commands for the targeting computer as he sped out into the fray; the little dart wouldn't have the firepower to penetrate the hull of the Fallen vessel, but there would be brief, tiny gaps in the Nephandic vessel's shielding for them to shoot through. Tiny, brief gaps that would leave the guns momentarily exposed. Tiny, brief gaps which through which a smaller, more agile vessel could deliver pinpoint strikes to disable weapons systems.

Whether a Napoleonic cannon, an ultra-tech turbolaser, or a dragon's fiery breath, they all had the same little flaw: wherever something comes out, something can also get in.

Punching in the last parameters into the targeting system, Colin dove in and rolled to the side to clear the hangar bay for the next fighter to take off or land.

Outside of The Shara there was chaos, absolute chaos. two of the zeppelins who's job it was to protect Horizon was blown to bits and you could see pieces of their hull floating everywhere, two more was burning and it was just a matter of time before they where destroyed. The rest of what Horizon had to defend itself with in the Umbra was out there fighting but the battle was not going well, here and there was debris from Umbreal vessels and the shattered remains of an Umbrood someone had summoned for help bounced off your small dart's shields. Quite a few ships and individual mages was still fighting but they where only really slowing down the advance of the Nephandic ships.

Back in 1993 the great Hermetic Collage Chantry Mus fell when both the Union and the Nephandi decided to attack it at once. You do not know where the knowledge come from, for part of you know that you do not have the details of this battle, but the you that are in the dart's cockpit knows. The Technocrazy brought their big guns, their dreadnoughts, kilometers long ships that hosed thousands of tiny vessels, but two of the giants nearly lost against of of the ships the Traditions classified as Nephandi battle cruisers. The last Lord an Councilor of Mus had described it as the twisted thing that carried the Nephandi to war, and they where. Two of the ships now threatened Horizon, if ships they where, they looked like a uncomfortable color of milky white and where slightly cigar shaped polyps, clearly organic and they clearly did not belong in our reality, not even the loose reality of the Middle Umbra. It was rare for the Fallen to bring these vessels out of the dark nothingness of the Deep Umbra, their mere presence in more defined reality level brought on massive mounts of Paradox, but boy where they a force to be reckoned with when they did.

One of the polyps where held at bay for now, but this would not last. You could see it in the distance, the Traditions two most powerful ships where there, firring barrage after barrage at it, not getting through it's shields but at least keeping it from advancing. It was a suicide run though for sooner or later the two Umbra ships would run out of steam...literary. One of the ships where St. Victoria's Blade, the personal vessel of the new Prima of the Etherites, the Tradition she had renamed the Children of Ether when she took the Seat of Matter Alexis Hastings where clearly prepared to give her life and the life of her crew to protect the realm bellow. By her side was The Heart Of Horizon, the ship had been Cita Telar's greatest creation, a ship formed from the leftover remains of an Avatar to damaged to save, now it was one huge phylactery and capable of refilling it's Quintessence batteries from the pool itself. But even The Heart and the Blade could not stop the Nephandic war ship, their only hope was that the zapplins would be able to finish of the other battle cruiser before they fell, so they would have Quintessence in their stores for another cannon blast. Masters of Spirit hauled their arts at the Nephandic ships with little effect, even a few exploration vessels and passenger ships had join the fray, but things where looking dark...

You join the fray and your targeting computer locks onto what have to be the closest of the two battle cruiser's main cannon, at least it was the thing by which the white polyp was shooting beams at the zeppelins with. Indeed it seams that you are right, whatever wards or some sort of energy based shields...whatever the ship who now tried to break through the Traditions defenses to get to Horizon used to protect itself went down for a fraction of a second as the beams of pure destruction where shot out, the larges ships where not quick enough to target this small gap but perhaps your fighter could...perhaps, but it meant getting into a pretty dangerous angle compeered to the polyps cannons.

Re: IC Thread Colin's Seeking

Colin exhaled slowly, whispering out an odd, faux-Latin incantation for letting his own time stretch just a little, to give his reflexes that little more time as he rolled up in front of the polyps and let loose a burst of fire, and tried to roll away again before the blast hit... A tricky maneuver under normal circumstances, but crossing before the beam a mere instant before the shot gave him perhaps just a large enough window of opportunity to disable - at least temporarily - the cannons.
With a moment of perfect, logical calm, he called up on the radio, "St. Victoria's Blade and Heart of Horizon, this is Wainwright. I'm making a run to disable the abominations' artillery. On the off chance I don't get out alive, please tell my wife and children that... their survival is the only victory I need, and to look me up next time I incarnate. And give the Fallen the oblivion they desire."
Nothing but the present. The past had led up to this point, and no longer mattered, the future would happen in its own time anyway, and no longer mattered. All that was important was right now, and the next second, and the next after that...

Colin rolled the fighter craft and fired short, focused bursts at the cannons in passing.

The bursts of fire from the battle cruiser are short, controlled and powerful, and one of them would destroy your tiny fighter in an instant, at least there would be no pain if that was your fate, you would cease to exist as anything but a bit of red mist in some broken up debris long before your brain had time to register what had happened, your shot would have to be perfect, just...perfect if you where to be able to nail the polyp's canon, a little to early and you would just hit whatever protection the thing had, a little to late and you would be dust and debris floating in the Umbra.

You get a short reply from Hastings over the radio, that she was a Prima of the Council and you a mere fighter pilot on a support vessel did not matter anymore, all that mattered was protecting Horizon and the people down there, Awakened and sleeper alike from what would happen if the Nephandi got through.
"I doubt we ourselves will live through this battle Mr Wainwright but if we do, or if the data logs from our ships make it through then your family will know, you have my word."

You rolled your small dart, the ship was quick and nimble and fire off a shot, you do not have to many of them, they all pulled Quintessence from the batteries and unlike The Heart, your ship could not replace it's own stores. You fire of the shot, the small burst of energy flow through the Umbra and for a moment there is no time, no magick cause this effect, it is just how it feels as you see your blast speed towards the battle cruiser as you send the dart into another roll to avoid the beam of corrupted Quintessence that would obliterate you if you had missed and your aim was off by just an hair...then everything happen at once...you see an explosion on the Nephandi ship, you hear the polyp scream, yes it actually screams and the sound is like a thousand souls crying out in agony, then you see the blast from the cannon, you have hit it you realize, and probably the expanding explosion is the part of the polyp you would call a cannon being destroyed but it got of one last blast before it was hit, a blast aimed for the nearby zeppelin, but what it do hit are the left floating engine of your dart, the roll you are already in saves you from the explosion when the Quintessence battery blows but your shields take a serious hit and your maneuverability are damaged.

Looking at the closest battle cruiser now however you see a great, bleeding wound that spew out puss and yellow black blood where the canon once was, though the wound was already beginning to regenerate, more importantly though your computer show a hole, not a big one but a hole none the less in the Fallen ship's shielding where the exploding cannon had ripped through whatever it was that protected the thing. You had managed to do some damage.

Colin jumped on the radio, "Thank you, Mistress Hastings. I just lost an engine, but there's a hole in their defenses... I... won't make it back now. If you could follow my lead, we might be able to do something decisive, right here and now."
He paused for a moment, aligning the dart with the opening in the shield, "I don't suppose it's July 4th back on Earth, is it? No matter - follow my trajectory and see if you can end this thing. Wainwright out... And God help us all."
He redlined the engine and charged through the hole in the shield, brute-forcing the dart into the open sore with all guns blazing... and calmly waited for the volley from the larger Tradition vessels to follow his trail.

"It is August 27th Mr Wainwright."
The Etherite said sounding a bit puzzled.
"However we will use this opportunity and aim at the hole in the Nephandic ship's defenses, however I can not focus most of my fire at it as the Blade have to help keep the other enemy vessel at bay until our zeppelins can do their work."
The Prima said before you made your mad dash towards the gap in the battle cruiser's defenses.

You fire at the Nephandi ship and you do think you do some damage, but the thing is massive and while and organic ship like this had it's disadvantages in some respects it could take more localized damage than a technological vessel, you might create a serious wound but without getting at the vital organs, the ship would live on an probably regenerate...you fire anyway and the ship scream, oh hell how it screams the sound make you want to vomit, then you can fire no more as the opening in the battle cruiser's defenses might be large enough for your little dart, but not for the renaming engine, you tear through the hole anyway and for a moment everything go dark, at least you have given the other ships something to aim at...but you turn out not to be dead.

You come to your senses a few moments later, your fighter are embedded in the internal wall of the battle cruiser, a wall that is made of flesh and looks very much like muscle and sinew once the skin is removed. Your ship have been forced through the wound int the battle cruiser and straight into the interior of the ship. At this time you realize that your arm hurt, looking down you see that the canopy of your fighter have shattered and bits of the transparent matter used for the ship's windows are embedded in your upper arm, other than this you are physically unhurt...for now. The battle cruiser shakes a bit as blasts from your allies ships hit it but it seams the hole in the polyp's defenses have already healed, standing you in a dark fleshy corridor, on a Nephandi battle cruiser, in the middle of an Umbral battle, two decks down from the ship's main cannon...alone without much hope of rescue.

Colin activated the little craft's emergency transponder (it should have its own battery, after all), pulled out his pistol (So many enchantments on it, so many parts replaced with Primium over the years - when had he ever found the time?) and hopped out of the dart, looking for some sort of map of the vessel, starting to make his way in the general direction of the main batteries or the power core, whichever he found first...

Your feet hit the floor of the shit and it is soft and squishy, you look down and see that you have stepped on a giant eye, other organs to grow out of the walls, you see a heart, some bits of teeth, a few sexual organs, but for the most part it is just the damp dark flesh that you now thread on.

You walk down one dark corridor, your footsteps muffled by the soft flooring when you hear two men walking as they move down an adjacent corridor, in a moment they will round a corner and find you and there are very few places to hide here, only red, damp walls and floors in what looks like Giger's wet dream. The voices of the two men where getting closer, they are speaking English and you hear one of them say.
"The wound should be healed soon and the cannon should be functioning again in five minutes."
The other man replies.
"Good the handler is getting impatient and you know her mood affect the ship, we need to keep the attack going and wipe out this stupid fleet before those air balloon things get time to power up."
The first man seam to agree with his companion.
"Yeah but what can we do, now shut up and let us just complete our rounds, the handler say someone might have gotten on board and if so, then she wants him."
The other Nephandus laugh.
"Yeah I bet she do, just between me and you though I kind of pity the bastard if there is really someone here, the last time the handler got to have fun with a prisoner...sheesh that is one scary kid, but as long as she manages to bond with the ship and keep it moving I won't complain..."

Colin smiled thinly, trying to make out a way past the voices and toward where they came from, without being noticed by them.
'Now, what would that Snake fellow Freddy used to talk about do? I think there was something about a box... I don't have a box. Well, let's see if I can reach this Handler,' he thought to himself as he gripped his gun and started to move, trying to avoid the noisier bits of flesh and the two Fallen. If he'd have to shoot them, he would, but he'd rather pass them unnoticed...

Finding a way part the voices without being seen is not easy, your only chance would be to get past the intersection they where heading towards and down a corridor to the right and hope that is not where they where going as well, and wait there until they had passed.

Colin slinked down to the intersection and dipped into the shadows, quickly using his "Lucky Coin Toss" to determine which passage he should hide in.
Then he waited, gun at the ready.

You wait for a few breathless moments as the voices of the two Fallen get closer, then...they get more distant again as the two men moves off and wanders down the corridor you came from, you managed to dodge that bullet and the coast seam to be clear, for now at least, to dart down the passage the two Nephandi had come from, if that was the path you wished to take.

Colin swiftly snuck down the path from which the Fallen had come, trying to find his way to the Handler, to perhaps stop her, or at least disorient the ship.

You move down another corridor, it looks very much like the one you just left, you have the feeling you are moving towards more central parts of the ship though from how it looked on the outside, but it is hard to know for there are so many paths, so many doors, the polyp is like a beehive and finding your way is not easy. Soon you encounter another Nephandus, this one is a woman, a small one with dark skin and big brown eyes, she sees you though as she comes out of one of the ship's doors and she begin to chant in that language of her kind that make your ears bleed with it's foulness, her words sounds like someone is skinning a baby, and you do not understand them, thankfully, the meaning is still clear though the woman is working some sort of magick and it is doubtful that whatever it is she is trying to do will be good for you.

Colin grimaced and whipped up the oddly distorted lens he used for Correspondence effects, and with a small effort of will, punched the Fallen woman in the throat from down the corridor to silence her. 'A wise man learns from his wife,' Colin thought smugly, rushing forward to finish the job, gambling on having bought enough time to prevent the Fallen from finishing whatever spell she was attempting.

((OOC: Yeah, that would be a Correspondence 2 effect - I presume Colin will have picked up at least that much this far in the future? Wink ))

The Nephandi woman grunted and grasped her throat, she fell to her knees and tried to breathe as she tried to pull a dagger from her belt with her other hand, whatever effect she was working on though that been pretty efficiently stopped, clearly she needed her foci to use her magick. The woman glare at you with hate in her dark eyes as she struggles to get her blade ready to attack you with but that is not easy to do when fighting to draw breath. You reach the woman before she manage to pull her knife from her belt.

(OOC: Yes this is 20 years after the event of the game so far. However since this in reality is Colin's fantasy world, though perhaps mixed in with a premonition of possibilities here and there, generally he will have the skills he believe deep down he would have at that time. The Mindscape is created by Colin's Avatar to teach him a lesson. Now low Arete Seekings tend to be more practical, the lessons to be learned often having to do with personal strengths or flaws and understanding the self, while higher Arete Seekings tend to be more esoteric in nature and deal with more spiritual ideas. In either case Colin is not in the future he just think he is, though he do not realize that right now and he experience the world around him as completely real.)

Colin stepped up to the Fallen, and hissed "Mjollnir", activating the hidden effect in his right glove; a neat little combination of Matter and Forces, increasing its mass and kinetic energy tenfold for a single strike. It usually sufficed to take down anything less durable than an elephant in a single punch, so long as he managed to hit... True, he'd not be able to do so again until the glove recharged over the course of several days' motion, but with luck, he'd manage to stay undetected until he reached his destination.

((OOC: Pretty much what I expected - so it should be safe to assume Colin's reached at least the third dot in most of his spheres. Or rather, he expects he will have done so. Wink ))

You activate your effect and more or less crush the Nephandi woman's head, at least her death was quick and painless compared to what she had probably done to people through the years and her broken body just collapsed onto the living, pulsating floor, and again you where alone in the hallway.

You could follow the same hallway down until a turn you see coming up ahead or you can look into the four rooms that have doors in this hallway. The doors are made of a bone line substance and they shone a dull yellow white in the dim illumination.

((OOC: Yes what he would expect to be true at this time, given that he now clearly live on Horizon in the Mindscape and have access to far greater resources to assume he have advanced his favorite Spheres at least to that of Disciple degree is pretty believable yes, after all like I said this is his Mindscape, a world created from his own mind.)

Colin quietly peered through one door at a time, looking for some convenient body disposal or better information on the vessel's layout. The closer he could get undetected, the better, and a stray corpse would certainly increase the risk of triggering some manner of manhunt, which would be most impractical.

You find a storage room full of metal crates behind one of the doors, it would probably be a good place to store a body. The battle cruiser shook softly again as you open the door to the storage room, reminding you of the battle outside, of how dire the situation was and how little time you had, as if you needed any reminders. In the storage room you also find some sort of computer terminal...or well you guess that is what it is for it have a screen, but the controls for the thing are all biological, what seams like strings of sinew growing under the screen to from some sort of insane harp, learning how to operate the thing would probably take far more time than you had right now.

Colin quickly hauled the Fallen corpse into the storage room and dumped it behind a crate, out of sight from the door. Then he looked for a bit at the terminal, and fished out his Chaos Wand, quickly casting one of his oldest, most intuitive rotes - the Lucky Guess. He might not have any idea how to operate the controls, but a few randomly plucked strings should make something relatively beneficial happen... Perhaps a schematic of the place, or a surveillance feed from somewhere nearby...

You work your magick on the odd terminal and then touch the strands of sinew, they feel strange and sharp under your fingers, but as you touch them, as if luck itself had smiled on you, the screen fill with a map of the polyp, and it was massive. The was you where able to interpret the schematic there where ten decks, each of them about half a kilometer in length. You find the crew quarters, the artillery rooms, what have to be the engines if this living thing even had such a thing, and the bridge. It is not easy to interpret the symbols on the screen as they are rather alien to you but using some common sense you find these areas, there is also one more area marked as critical, it was two decks up, right beside what you think...though you are not sure, to be the brain of the ship. There is a small chamber there and it would make sense that if the ship have a Handler, she would be there.
